About Us

Municipal Awards Company is family owned and operated and has been in business for over forty years. It was created, with input from many customers, to assist mayors of towns and cities, county officials, and company executives in providing recognition to deserving individuals and groups.

Started in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1959, and originally called Modern Printing Company, Municipal Awards Company was the vision of owner-operator, A. Gray Stephens and his wife, Jean. After countless hours of research and artistic creation, Municipal Awards Company was born as a direct mail business with the motto “Quality and Service”.

Gray Stephens, or “Steve”, as he was known to his friends and employees, along with Jean devoted many long days to the creation and day to day running of the business. On July 2, 1993, Gray Stephens’ life was cut short by a massive heart attack at the age of 59. The day of his funeral his only child, Stephanie Cummings, made the decision to continue where her father left off.

Two moves, one in 1994 to Hanceville, Alabama, and another in 1999 to Cullman, Alabama, made it easier for the mother/daughter team to continue its hands-on management of the business.

Since taking the helm of the company, Stephanie, with much help and guidance from mother, Jean, was able to finish, edit, and produce another dream conceived and begun by her father, The Blue Book of Awards.

Our Philosophy

We believe everyone desires to be remembered and appreciated by his community. Morale is lifted and success encouraged by simply noticing and rewarding a job well done. This principle is valid whether the community in question is the business community, the civic club, church community, or the entire town, village, city, county, state, or national community.

It falls to those in charge to see that good deeds are rewarded and that morale is kept at its highest. While this sounds like a tremendous job, with a little forethought and awareness it can be accomplished with ease. We strive to provide quality goods to suit all of your recognition needs and help you bestow recognition with style. By helping you reward the good in your community, we believe we help make the world a better place.

It is an honor and a privilege to be running my family’s business. I love this business and I love what it stands for. It is my dream that the business will continue on its mission and be blessed for many years to come.
